MASK Consortium: same design, rebuilt to work on a phone

OVERVIEW:
Virtual Exhibits

Client: MASK Consortium
Location: New York City
Work: Web Design & Development
Relationship: 6 years
MASK Consortium immersive exhibition installation

Summary. Modus Medium rebuilt and maintains the website for MASK Consortium, Museums of Art Sharing Knowledge, so museums and educational partners can evaluate immersive exhibitions they have not seen in person.

The problem. MASK Consortium’s work is physically large. The Invisible Worlds Theater at the American Museum of Natural History is a room you walk into. So are the Max Roach Bebop x Hiphop program and the Moonmedicin Lost Art Tour. A curator or funder deciding whether to host one is doing it from a laptop, months before anything is installed.

The previous site carried the right identity and was clunky to use. It handled phones badly, which is disqualifying when the people evaluating your work are doing it between meetings.

The build. WordPress and Elementor, rebuilt at a point when Elementor itself was still new.

  • The existing design largely kept and improved rather than replaced, so the organization did not lose its visual identity in a technical fix
  • Rebuilt to work properly on mobile
  • Full-bleed rotating hero showing the exhibitions themselves instead of a description of services
  • Portfolio and Case Studies as separate top-level paths, so a booker and a funder take different routes

The result. Six years on retainer. The relationship also produced a second commission: MASK Consortium brought Modus Medium onto the re:mancipation exhibition site for the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin, a project that now carries all three names in its credit line.
