Olombria: explaining hoverfly pollination to the people who fund it

Summary. Modus Medium rebuilt and maintains the website for Olombria, a United Kingdom agricultural technology company, so investors and growers can understand a pollination system with no obvious precedent.

The problem. Olombria uses hoverflies, and technology that directs them, to manage pollination and pest control in enclosed growing environments where traditional pollinators do not perform well. Almost nobody arrives at that site already knowing what that means.

The numbers the company publishes explain why it matters. Around 75 percent of agricultural crops depend on pollination. Aphid infestation alone can cost up to 80 percent of a crop. Pesticide resistance and pollinator decline are pushing both figures the wrong way.

None of that is obvious in the first ten seconds. A site that opens on product features asks a visitor to evaluate a solution before they have accepted there is a problem. The job was order of operations.

The build. WordPress and Elementor, rebuilt with a new design and a new structure.

  • Information architecture designed by Modus Medium, staging the explanation across What We Do, Olombria System and Facts rather than presenting it at once
  • Opens on three words, pollination, bio-pest control and data, above a single line of benefit, better fruit quality
  • A dedicated Facts section, so the supporting evidence has a home instead of interrupting the pitch
  • Built to hold a story that was still changing, from an idea being explained to a system being described

The result. Eight years, on retainer, and the only client in the portfolio outside the United States. The site has carried the company through the shift from explaining a concept to describing a working system without another rebuild.
