Summary. Modus Medium built the exhibition site for re:mancipation at the Chazen Museum of Art, so the research behind a multi-year project stays available to anyone who could not attend in person.

The problem. re:mancipation is a multi-year project with the artist Sanford Biggers that recontextualizes Thomas Ball’s Emancipation Group, engaging the history of racism in American culture and public monuments. The scholarship behind it is the point, and an exhibition page that lists dates and a floor plan throws that away.

There was a second problem. The exhibition had an end date. Whatever went online had to outlive the show, because the research does not stop being useful when the gallery closes.

The build. WordPress and Elementor, built from scratch.

  • Structure built around the research itself rather than around the visit: Re:garding, Re:process, Re:form, Responses, Re:sources
  • A Matterport walkthrough integrated at the foot of the home page, so a visitor can move through the installation as it stood
  • Sanford Biggers, the Chazen and MASK Consortium carried together in the site’s own credit line

The result. The exhibition closed. The site is still live at remancipation.org, still holding the scholarship, and the Matterport walkthrough still lets someone stand inside a show that is no longer installed.
