Summary. Modus Medium built and maintains the website for East Freedman & Main, a multi-city community development effort, so residents, funders and city partners can see specific buildings and neighborhoods rather than read about the idea of them.

The problem. Community development is easy to describe in language nobody can check. Reclaiming neighborhoods, local ownership, empowered communities. All true, and all weightless to a funder who has read the same sentences from every organization that has asked them for money.

The work itself is the opposite of abstract. It happens on named blocks, in specific buildings, in more than one city. The site had to carry that specificity, and it had to do it for three audiences at once: residents who live there, funders deciding whether to back it, and city partners deciding whether to participate.

The build. WordPress and Elementor, built from scratch.

  • Hero treatment combining real photography of Philadelphia rowhouses with illustration, so the work reads as both grounded and forward-looking
  • A dedicated investor path, separating the funding case from the community-facing material
  • Our Work and Our Team, putting names and buildings in front of the language
  • Structure that holds multiple cities without flattening them into one story

The result. Nine years, on retainer, through Indie-Life Media.
